When Life Feels Out Of Control

Finding Peace In The Middle Of Life’s Upheaval

Life can change in an instant.

One moment everything feels predictable, normal, steady.  The next moment, you’re facing unexpected stress, heartbreak, uncertainty, or emotional exhaustion.  Maybe it’s a sudden death, a financial struggle, a broken relationship, a health issue, or simply the overwhelming weight of everyday life piling up all at once.

It’s the moment when you have an uncontrollable urge to scream.  Or throw things.  Or…

If you’re walking through a season of upheaval, you are not alone– and you are not without hope.

God never promised we would avoid difficult seasons, but He did promise to walk beside us through them.  Even in the chaos, His peace is available to us.  Jesus reminds us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

When life feels heavy, there are practical and spiritual steps you can take to calm your mind, strengthen your heart, and reconnect with God’s peace.  Here are some faith-filled ways to regain your footing when life feels slippery or overwhelming.

Put On The Brakes And Protect Your Peace

When life spins out of control, our first instinct is often to keep pushing harder.  But sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is slow down.

Not every responsibility needs your immediate attention.  Not every request deserves a “yes.”  Setting boundaries is not selfish– it’s wise stewardship of your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual resources.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”  Give yourself permission to pause.  Rest.  Breathe.  Pray.

God can handle what you cannot.

Break Unhealthy Cycles And Refresh Your Mind

During stressful seasons, it’s easy to fall into unhealthy patterns.  Maybe you scroll endlessly on your phone, binge-watch television, or eat that half-gallon of Haagen-Dazs.  Maybe you just curl up under the covers and emotionally shut down.

Looking for a little comfort isn’t wrong.  But staying stuck there can deepen anxiety and exhaustion.

Instead, try varying your day:

  • Spend time in prayer, just thanking God for what He’s already done
  • Read encouraging scriptures, such as Psalms
  • Talk with a trusted friend
  • Take a walk in nature
  • Listen to worship music
  • Work on a simple task or hobby that gives you joy

Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  Sometimes renewing your mind starts with changing your routine.

Step Away From The Noise

Constant notifications, social media rants and opinions, and news reports that upset you can fuel worry and fear.

There’s wisdom in stepping back from the digital noise for a while.

Instead of filling your head with endless information, fill it with God’s truth.  Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”  Let God’s Word reassure you that all will be well.

When anxiety rises, unplug for a moment and reconnect with the One who never changes.  Rest in His security.

Be Kind, Even When You’re Struggling

One of the quickest ways to interrupt negative thinking is to focus on helping someone else.

A kind word.  A prayer.  A smile.  A text message.  An unexpected gift.  Small acts of love can shift your perspective and brighten someone else’s day, too.

Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Kindness has a way of softening anxious hearts– including our own.

Take Care Of Yourself

Remember the instruction of the airline stewardess:  “In time of trouble, put your own air mask on first.”

When stress takes over, self-care is often the first thing to go.  But your body, mind, and spirit all need attention during difficult seasons:

  • Eat nourishing foods
  • Get enough sleep
  • Stay hydrated
  • Move your body
  • Rest without guilt
  • Pray and praise

First Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.  Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Taking care of yourself is not selfishness– it’s wisdom.  Your well-being matters to God.

Remember Seasons Are Temporary

When we’re hurting, it can feel like nothing will ever change and life will never improve.  But feelings are not forever, and difficult seasons do not last forever either.

Remember the promise of Jeremiah 29:11, ” ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ “

Hold onto hope.  God is still working, even when you cannot yet see the outcome.

Accept What You Cannot Control

Inner peace begins when we stop fighting battles God never asked us to fight.

Some things are outside your control– and that’s okay.  Surrendering those burdens to God creates space for peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Let Him carry what you cannot.

Be Honest About Your Feelings

Too often we hide behind “I’m fine” when actually we’re hurting.

It’s okay to express how you’re feeling (appropriately, of course).  God already knows what’s in your heart.  He’s not going to be shocked by your honesty.  You can bring Him your grief, doubt, frustration, fear, disappointment.  He will never turn you away.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Your strength may fail, but His never will.  Healing begins when we stop pretending.

Clear The Clutter Around And Within You

Physical clutter an contribute to emotional stress.  A chaotic environment often creates a chaotic mind.

You don’t have to organize your entire life overnight.  Start small:

  • Clean one small space
  • Put away what distracts
  • Give away what is no longer needed
  • Simplify your schedule

First Corinthians 14:33 says, “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.”

Creating peaceful spaces on the outside can help calm your spirit on the inside.

Sometimes peace comes through small moments as well:

  • Smile intentionally
  • Light a calming candle
  • Keep a gratitude journal
  • Go to church

Even brief moments of peace can reset your heart and mind.

Peace Is A Journey, Not A Destination

Inner peace is not about living a perfect life with zero stress.  It’s about learning to stay rooted in Christ no matter what life brings.

That journey takes practice, patience, and faith.  Some days will feel easier than others.  But through every challenge, God remains faithful.  Follow the advice of Colossians 3:15, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.”  When life feels uncertain, cling to the One who never changes.  He is the solid Rock, the stability you’re searching for.

You may not control every circumstance, but with God’s help, you can choose your next step.  You can choose prayer over panic, peace over performance, and trust over fear.

And little by little, God will strengthen your heart and guide you forward.
