Want Stronger Faith?
Have you ever wondered why some Christians seem to have such strong faith?
They talk confidently about God’s promises. They pray with expectation. They trust God even when life gets difficult.
Meanwhile, others love the Lord just as much but struggle to believe that God will come through for them.
Why is that? Is faith simply a personality trait? Is it a gift given to only a few believers? Or can faith actually be developed?
The good news is that the Bible gives a wonderfully simple answer.
Faith isn’t something we have to manufacture. It grows naturally as we spend time in God’s Word and allow the Holy Spirit to make that Word real to us.
Faith Comes from Hearing
The Apostle Paul wrote: “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” (Romans 10:17, NIV)
This verse has encouraged Christians for centuries because it tells us exactly where faith begins. Faith comes through hearing God’s message.
But anyone who has walked with the Lord for very long knows there’s more to hearing than simply reading words on a page.
Have you ever read a Bible passage dozens of times, only to have it suddenly come alive one day? You stop and think, I’ve read this before, but I’ve never seen it like this. It’s one of those wonderful “aha!” moments.
The words haven’t changed.
You have.
Or more accurately, the Holy Spirit has opened your eyes to understand them in a deeper way.
That’s one of the beautiful ways God grows our faith.
Hearing with Spiritual Ears
Jesus often ended His teaching with these words: “Whoever has ears, let them hear.” (Matthew 11:15, NIV)
Everyone listening had physical ears. Jesus was talking about something much deeper. He was speaking about hearts that are willing to hear what God is saying.
The Holy Spirit takes the written Word and impresses it on our hearts. What was once simply information becomes personal truth. We don’t merely understand the verse—we begin to believe it.
That’s why reading the Bible is unlike reading any other book. God is still speaking through His Word today.
Jesus said, “The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.” (John 6:63, NIV)
The Bible isn’t just an ancient collection of writings. It is living truth that God uses to transform us from the inside out.
Head Knowledge Becomes Heart Knowledge
Many of us know Bible verses by memory.
We know that God loves us. We know He forgives us. We know He provides for His children.
But sometimes there’s a difference between knowing those things in our heads and believing them deep in our hearts. That deeper confidence often comes gradually as we continue reading, praying, and meditating on God’s Word.
One day, something simply clicks. You find yourself thinking, I know this is true. Not because someone convinced you. Not because you worked up enough positive thinking. But because God has made His truth real to you.
That’s how faith grows.
What Does It Mean to Meditate on God’s Word?
The Bible repeatedly encourages us to meditate on Scripture.
That doesn’t mean emptying our minds. Biblical meditation means filling our minds with God’s truth.
Joshua was told: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.” (Joshua 1:8, NIV)
Meditating is wonderfully practical. It means
- reading a verse slowly
- thinking about it
- praying over it
- repeating it throughout the day
- asking yourself what it reveals about God
- considering how it applies to your life today.
David described the blessed person this way: “Blessed is the man whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water…” (Psalm 1:2–3, NIV)
Just as a tree draws constant nourishment from the stream beside it, we receive spiritual strength as we continually feed on God’s Word.
Why Some Christians Seem to Have Stronger Faith
Have you ever met someone whose faith seems unshakable? It may be tempting to think they simply received a larger measure of faith than everyone else.
More often than not, something else is happening.
They’ve spent years feeding their hearts on God’s promises. They’ve watched Him answer prayers. They’ve learned to recognize His faithfulness. They’ve filled their minds with Scripture until trusting Him has become their normal response.
That doesn’t make them better Christians.
It simply shows what happens when God’s Word is given room to grow.
Faith develops much like physical strength. A healthy body isn’t built by eating one good meal. It’s built by consistent nourishment over time.
Our spirits grow the same way.
The Seed Grows All by Itself
Jesus illustrated this beautifully. “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain…” (Mark 4:26–28, NIV)
God’s Word is the seed.
Our hearts are the soil.
Our responsibility is simply to keep planting the seed.
We read. We listen. We meditate. We obey what God shows us.
Then something remarkable happens. Almost without noticing it, faith begins to grow.
We don’t make it happen.
God does.
Faith Leads to Action
As our confidence in God’s Word increases, we’ll naturally begin acting on what He says.
James reminds us:
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22, NIV)
Faith isn’t merely believing something is true. It means trusting God enough to obey Him. Sometimes that means taking a step before we see the outcome.
As Paul wrote, “For we live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7, NIV)
Faith isn’t wishful thinking. It’s confidence in the character of a faithful God.
Whatever You Need Today, Start with God’s Word
Perhaps you’re believing God for healing. Maybe it’s wisdom for a difficult decision. Perhaps you’re praying for financial provision, restoration in your family, peace in anxious circumstances, or simply a closer walk with the Lord.
Whatever your need, begin where faith begins.
Open your Bible. Find verses that speak to your situation. Read them slowly. Speak them aloud. Pray them back to God. Think about them throughout your day. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what He’s saying.
Little by little, His promises will become more than words on a page. They’ll become truth anchored in your heart.
And as that happens, you’ll discover something wonderful.
Your faith is growing.
Faith Is a Journey
The writer of Hebrews gives us this timeless definition: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1, NIV)
That kind of confidence doesn’t usually appear overnight. It grows as we spend time with the One who is completely trustworthy. The more we know God, the easier it becomes to trust Him. And the primary place we come to know Him is through His Word.
So if it’s been a while since you’ve opened your Bible, why not begin today?
You don’t have to read ten chapters. Start with one.
Ask God to speak to you through it.
Read it slowly.
Think about it during the day.
Tomorrow, do it again.
Over time you’ll find yourself believing God’s promises with a confidence you didn’t have before—not because you’ve tried harder, but because you’ve spent time with the God who is always faithful.
And there is no greater adventure than learning to walk with Him by faith.
