Never Too Old, Never Too Late

Embracing God’s Plan At Every Age

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I’m too old for that” or “It’s too late?”  Unfortunately our society celebrates youth while it treats aging as something to fear or hide rather than embrace.  The message we often get is that certain opportunities have expiration dates.

But is that true?  God has a very different perspective on aging.

The truth is that your value, purpose, and potential are not determined by the number of candles on your birthday cake.  That is determined by the God who created you and continues to work in you, no matter how old you are.

Folk singer Joan Collins said, “Age is just a number.”  And that is true.  (Actress Bette Davis said, “Aging ain’t for sissies”– and that’s true, too!)

But the greatest truth is that whether you’re 25 or 95, God still has plans for your life.

You see, God doesn’t measure life the way the world does.  The world associates aging with decline, limitations, and missed opportunities.  But that’s not how God sees it.  God says those who are older are to be honored.  And more than that, throughout Scripture we see God using people in every season of life.

Need some examples?  God called Abraham and Sarah to start a family when they were well past the age most people would consider ideal and possible.  Moses was a feisty 80 years old when God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian captivity.  And Noah was an astounding 600 years old when he finished building the ark.

God isn’t limited by age, and neither are His purposes.  Isaiah 46:4 reminds us:  “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you.  I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

What a beautiful promise!  God doesn’t retire His people; He doesn’t set them on a shelf or put them out to pasture.  He continues to sustain, guide, and use us throughout our lives.

Your Body, Brain, and Spirit Can Continue Growing

Modern research continues to reveal that our brains can learn, adapt, and change throughout life.  People regularly learn new skills, languages, and technologies in their later years.   Many individuals continue achieving impressive physical goals long after society expects them to slow down.  Just last night I saw a report on the news about a lady who celebrated her birthday by skydiving– her 100th birthday, that is!

On a much smaller scale, I have a personal example of this.  Back in 2013 I was in a car accident where my right heel and ankle were basically shattered.  I recovered, but ended up with arthritis in my feet.  This affected my balance, and I began to fall frequently, so I required a cane.

My doctor recommended that I try Tai Chi, because that helps with balance.  I equated Tai Chi with exercise, something I was never crazy about.  I had tried to get into a regular exercise routine at different points in my life, but I found it boring and could never stick with it.  Still, I decided to give it a try.

To my amazement, I found that I actually enjoyed it!  I have a wonderful teacher, and I’ve met many new friends through the class.  We all encourage one another and laugh a lot, so the class is a lot of fun.  Since starting it, I’ve only had one fall, so it actually has helped me with my balance.  Next month will mark my fourth year doing Tai Chi, something I never thought I’d be doing in my seventies!

My point is, you’re never too old to try something new.  It’s never too late to go after your dreams.

Perhaps you’ve been carrying a desire in your heart for years.  Maybe God has placed a ministry, business, creative project or mission on your heart that you’ve been hesitant to pursue because of your age.  Don’t let the calendar hold you back from what God’s calling you to do!

Some of God’s servants accomplished their most significant work later in life.  Others spent years in preparation before stepping into their ministry.  You may think your greatest opportunities are behind you, but the Bible tells a different story.

Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  You may be living that future now.  Go after what God has for you!

I’ve mentioned mental and physical growth, but as Christians we know there’s another side that’s even more important: spiritual growth.  As long as we have breath, God is shaping us into the image of Christ.  Philippians 1:6 assures us, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

God doesn’t stop His work in us when we retire.  In fact, He may be just beginning!  His transformation process continues throughout our entire lives.

Stop Letting Age Define You

One of the blessings of aging is the wisdom that comes from experience.  Every challenge you’ve overcome, every lesson you’ve learned, every trial you’ve survived can become a testimony that encourages others.  Every year lived with Christ adds depth, perspective, and spiritual maturity that can bless future generations.  What we’ve lost in youthful energy is gained in wisdom, and God places great value in that.

“Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness” (Proverbs 16:31).  Instead of viewing age as something to hide, we should view it as evidence of God’s faithfulness!  As we mature in faith, we learn to appreciate what truly matters:  God’s presence, meaningful relationships, eternal purpose, and the blessings He provides each day.

One of the enemy’s favorite tactics is convincing us that we’re either too young, too old, too inexperienced, or too late.  But God specializes in using people who feel unqualified.  Instead of thinking “I’m too old,” ask God what He is calling you to do next.  Instead of focusing on limitations, focus on God’s power.  Instead of dwelling on what you haven’t done, thank God for the opportunities that still lie ahead.

Remember the words of Ephesians 2:10:  “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”   Notice that verse doesn’t place an age limit on those good works.  No matter how old you are, God can still work in and through you.

Need proof?  Look at this wonderful promise in Psalm 94:14:  “They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.”  What an incredible picture!  God doesn’t merely promise survival in our later years.  He promises fruitfulness!  A life rooted in Christ will continue producing spiritual fruit at every age.

It’s time for us to view aging differently.  It’s not something to dread, it’s something to delight in.  Even as we grow older, we can remain teachable.  We can continue to grow in every area of our lives.  We can pursue what God is calling us to.  We can embrace new experiences with courage.

Most importantly, we can remember that our identity is not found in our age, appearance, accomplishments, or limitations.  Our identity is forever in Christ.  The number on the calendar may change every year, but God’s love and faithfulness remain constant.

So whatever season of life you’re in today, don’t count yourself out.  God isn’t finished with you.  Your story is still being written, your calling is still unfolding, and your best days of serving Him may still be ahead.

Because in God’s kingdom, age is just a number– but His purpose for your life is eternal.
