Embracing Growth God’s Way

A Christ-Centered Growth Mindset Makes Change Possible

Have you ever felt like you’ve hit a wall– mentally, emotionally, even spiritually?  The good news is that God never designed us to stay stuck.  Through Him we are constantly being reshaped, refined, and renewed.

Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase “growth mindset.”  Psychology Today defines it as “the belief that one can improve one’s abilities and talents over time through effort and learning.”  (The opposite is a fixed mindset, believing that nothing will ever change.)

I think of a growth mindset really being a faith-mindset, believing that transformation is possible.  A growth mindset isn’t just a self-improvement concept; it’s a biblical principle.  As followers of Christ we are called to grow, mature, and become more like Him every day.  I love Romans 12:2 which says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Let’s explore how cultivating a growth mindset grounded in faith can help you step into the life God has for you.

Seeing Challenges As Opportunities For Growth

Benjamin Franklin said that there are two certainties in life: death and taxes.  But I think he missed a third certainty:  challenges.

Challenges in life are unavoidable, but they are never wasted in God’s hands.  What feels like an obstacle may actually be an opportunity for growth.  Instead of fearing difficulties, see them as a training ground for your faith and character.

This is why the apostle James could say, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (James 1:2-3).

God often uses hard seasons to stretch us into who He’s calling us to become.  When you face a challenge, ask yourself:

  • What is God teaching me here?
  • How can this situation strengthen my faith?

One challenge we all face is mistakes and failures.  Let’s be honest: no one likes to fail.  But failure is not the end of your story.  In fact, it can be one of your greatest teachers.

The Bible is filled with imperfect people whom God still used in powerful ways.  Think of King David’s shortcomings, or Peter’s denial of Christ three times.  Yet both were restored and continued to fulfill God’s purpose.

Someone once told me, “Failure is how many times you fall; success is how many times you get up.”  Proverbs 24:16 says, Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again…”  The secret to success is to keep getting up!

Remember, failure is not final when you’re in God’s hands.  Instead of dwelling on your mistakes, you should:

  • Reflect on what went wrong
  • Seek God’s forgiveness and wisdom
  • Move forward with renewed perspective

Foster A Positive Faith-Filled Outlook

Remember, a growth mindset is the belief that change is possible.  I’m living proof of that, which is why I put the phrase “Change is possible!” on my business cards.  A growth mindset thrives on hope, and as Christians, our hope is rooted in Christ.

Choosing a positive outlook doesn’t mean ignoring reality.  It means trusting that God is working in every situation.  My favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

You can cultivate this faith-mindset by:

  • Practicing gratitude daily
  • Surrounding yourself with encouraging, faith-filled people
  • Focusing on God’s promises rather than your problems.

It’s also important to realize that growth doesn’t happen in isolation.  God often uses others to refine, guide, and encourage us.

There are times in life when we may have to reach out to others for help.  This might mean counseling, either pastoral or psychiatric (or both, as in my case), or it could mean participating in a support group.  Seeking help can feel uncomfortable, but it’s a powerful tool for transformation.

Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed.”  I can tell you from personal experience that as you pray for help and guidance, God will bring those advisors into your life.  He will show you who to trust, and He will give you peace that this is the right path to follow.

As you consult with them, you’ll need to:

  • Share openly and honestly
  • Listen without becoming defensive
  • Take action on advice that aligns with God’s Word

Godly counsel helps you to see blind spots and grow in wisdom.  Seeking help is a tough step to take, but you’ll be so glad you did.

Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone In Faith

Growth requires movement, and often that movement feels uncomfortable.  Let’s face it, our comfort zone can be pretty cozy– but there’s little room for growth there.  Whether it’s starting something new, letting go of something, or trusting God in times of uncertainty, stepping out in faith is essential.

I had to step out in faith when I started this blog.  My computer skills were minimal, and I had a lot to learn– but I knew this was something God wanted me to do.  It has stretched me, but it’s also enabled me to do things I never thought I would do.  And that’s exciting!

So start small if you need to, but start!

  • Try something new
  • Say yes to what God is prompting you to do
  • Trust Him with the outcome

Lastly, realize that transformation is a lifetime journey.  Cultivating a growth mindset grounded in faith is not a one-time decision.  It’s a daily commitment to becoming who God created you to be.  Philippians 1:6 says, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…”

God is not finished with you yet.  Every challenge, every lesson, every step of faith is part of His greater plan.

Keep growing.  Keep trusting.  Keep becoming.  And in the process, you’ll bring God glory.
